President Joko Widodo delivered a number of directions to the newly appointed Chief of Naval Staff (KSAL). The President emphasized that the main focus of Admiral Muhammad Ali was to increase the country’s sovereignty at sea, especially with regard to borders and frontier islands.

“We know that two-thirds of Indonesia is water, is sea. So the concentration on state sovereignty, especially in the sea, is the big responsibility of the new KSAL, Mr. Muhammad Ali,” said President Jokowi in his statement after his inauguration at the State Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, December 28, 2022.

In addition, the President asked for the modernization of the main weapon system (alutsista) of the sea to be continuously strengthened. In a separate statement, KSAL Admiral Muhammad Ali explained that President Jokowi encouraged the development of the domestic shipping industry for the Navy.

“Especially in the development of forces in the form of KRI. So now the Indonesian Navy has, maybe 70 percent, already used domestic products for its ships,” said Ali.

Another thing emphasized by President Jokowi, according to Ali, is related to the potential for vulnerability at sea in the form of smuggling and other illegal activities. The President stressed the Navy to continue to try to prevent and stop all forms of illegal activity at sea.

“Another vulnerability issue is smuggling. The President also emphasized preventing or stopping smuggling activities and other illegal activities at sea or by sea,” he added.
