The Vatican announced the death of Pope Benedict XVI today, Saturday (31/12). The leader of the Catholic Church and Head of State for the Vatican in 2005-2013 died at the age of 95.
Real name Joseph Ratzinger, he is the first Pope to step down in 600 years, making him “Pope Emeritus”. His decision to resign in February 2013 shocked the world. He resigned for health reasons, and after that remained in the Vatican.
Francis was then elected to be the next Pope, succeeding Benedict XVI.
Previously, Pope Francis this week had reported on the condition of Benedict XVI who was “seriously ill”, and asked the people to pray for him.
Funeral services are expected to be held at the Vatican.
