“Today the world’s eyes are on our meeting. Are we going to score success? Or will we add another number of failures? For me, the G20 must succeed and must not fail,” said the President.

As President of the G20, he continued, Indonesia has made every effort to bridge very deep and wide differences. However, President Jokowi believes that success will only be achieved if all countries, without exception, are committed, work hard, set aside differences to produce something concrete and useful for the world in the midst of various challenges faced.

“The world is experiencing extraordinary challenges. Crisis after crisis occurs. The Covid-19 pandemic is not over, rivalries continue to sharpen, wars occur. The impact of these various crises on food, energy and financial security is felt by the world, especially developing countries,” he said.

In the session that discussed global economic conditions, food security, and energy, the President also asked all countries not to underestimate the issue of fertilizers. According to him, if the leaders do not immediately take steps to ensure the availability of sufficient fertilizer at affordable prices, then 2023 will be a bleaker year.

“The current high food prices could worsen into a crisis of no food supply. Scarcity of fertilizers can lead to crop failure in various parts of the world. The 48 developing countries with the highest levels of food insecurity will face very serious conditions. In addition, we also see the world order and international law is also being tested,” he explained.

At the end of his opening speech, President Jokowi hopes that the G20 can continue to be a catalyst for an inclusive economic recovery. In the midst of a very difficult situation, the President hopes that the G20 will continue to work to produce concrete achievements, prepare funds to deal with the upcoming pandemic through pandemic funds, and help low-income countries’ fiscal space through resilience and sustainability trust.

In addition, President Jokowi also hopes that the G20 can accelerate the achievement of the SDGs, produce hundreds of concrete collaborations, and support the recovery of a greener and more sustainable world economy through the Bali Compact on energy transition.

“We don’t just talk, but take concrete steps. Finally, let’s show the world that we can be wise, take responsibility, and show leadership. Let’s work, and let’s work together for the world. Recover together , recover stronger,” he concluded.

Also accompanying the President on the occasion were Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi, Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani, and Governor of Bank Indonesia Perry Warjiyo.
