Indonesia and Vietnam agreed on a number of memorandums of understanding (MoU) during the state visit of the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyễn Xuân Phúc at the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on Thursday, December 22, 2022. “Today we succeeded in agreeing on three MoUs, namely on cooperation in energy and mineral resources, cooperation in countering terrorism, cooperation in eradicating the illegal narcotics trade,” said the President.

The three collaborations that have been agreed upon by Indonesia and Vietnam are:

  1. Memorandum of understanding between the National Counterterrorism Agency (BNPT) and the Ministry of Public Security of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on counter-terrorism cooperation;
  2. Memorandum of understanding between the National Narcotics Agency of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Public Security of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam regarding cooperation in eradicating illicit trade in narcotics, psychotropic substances and their precursors; and
  3. Memorandum of understanding between the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of the Republic of Indonesia and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam regarding cooperation in the field of energy and mineral resources.

In addition to these three collaborations, President Jokowi also hopes that the cooperation between Indonesia and Vietnam in the fisheries sector and eradicating illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing can be finalized soon.

“I hope that cooperation in fisheries and the eradication of IUU fishing can be strengthened by accelerating the finalization of the MoU on maritime and fisheries cooperation,” he added.

Furthermore, President Jokowi appreciates Vietnam’s support for Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023. The priority for Indonesia’s chairmanship will later emphasize ASEAN’s central role in maintaining regional stability and peace.
