President Jokowi and President of Vietnam Discuss Efforts to Increase Indonesia-Vietnam Cooperation

President Joko Widodo held a bilateral meeting with the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Nguyễn Xuân Phúc during his state visit to the Bogor Presidential Palace, West Java, on Thursday, 22 December 2022. In his statement after the meeting took place, President Jokowi said that the two countries’ leaders discussed efforts to increase trade between the two countries. The Head of State said that the governments of Indonesia and Vietnam had set a new bilateral trade target of US$15 billion by 2028.

“In the last five years there has been an increase in trade of 9.77 percent. For this reason, we agreed to set a new bilateral trade target of US$ 15 billion in 2028. Indonesia calls for attention to the delays in Indonesian agricultural and fruit products entering the Vietnam market. ,” said the Head of State.

On this occasion, President Jokowi appreciated the Vietnamese government’s trust in Indonesian companies to invest in Vietnam. The President also hopes that a number of issues can be resolved soon to encourage new investment in the future.

“Indonesia’s investment accumulation in Vietnam has reached more than US$600 million in 101 projects. I hope the resolution of several issues experienced by Indonesian investors will encourage new investments in the future,” said President Jokowi.

In addition, President Jokowi welcomed the Indonesia-Vietnam cooperation in the field of energy and mineral resources, one of which is to encourage the development of solar, hydrogen and smart grid power plants.

Apart from that, the Head of State also emphasized the importance of increasing connectivity between the two countries to restore the flow of goods and tourist traffic as it was during the pre-pandemic period by revitalizing and finalizing new flight routes.

“Direct flight routes between the business and tourism centers of the two countries must be revitalized. Airlines from the two countries are expected to be able to finalize plans for new flight routes from Da Nang to Denpasar and Ho Chi Minh-Jakarta, as well as additional flight routes for Jakarta-Ho Chi Minh City, ” said the President.

On another issue, President Jokowi said that the governments of Indonesia and Vietnam had completed negotiations on the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) regarding the EEZ boundaries of the two countries.

“After carrying out intensive negotiations for 12 years, Indonesia and Vietnam have finally been able to conclude negotiations regarding the EEZ boundary lines of the two countries based on the 1982 UNCLOS,” said the Head of State.

On the same occasion, President Nguyễn Xuân Phúc said that the Vietnamese government also welcomed the cooperation in Indonesia-Vietnam bilateral relations as well as international issues of mutual interest.

“I agree with what was said by the President (Jokowi) regarding a good strategic partnership relationship between Indonesia and Vietnam. In overcoming various challenges, we must increase political trust and also increase economic cooperation,” said the Vietnamese President.
